The Craftsmen Training Scheme was introduced by the Government of India in year 1950 to ensure a steady flow of skilled work force in different trades for the domestic industry, to raise quantitatively and qualitatively the industrial production by systematic training, to reduce unemployment among the educated youth by providing them employable skills, to cultivate and nurture a technical and industrial attitude in the minds of younger generation.
Presently, this scheme is being implemented through a network of 15,042 ITIs (Govt. 2,738 + Private 12,304) and 33 NSTIs located all over the country by ensuring the general standards laid down by Director General of Training. Under the Craftsman Training scheme (CTS), the duration of various trades training courses varies between 1 to 2 years.

Combination of Subjects : The following subjects are covered.
Start of session : 1st August of every year.
Eligibility for Admission : Passed 10th class examination or equivalent.
Admission & Award of Certificate : Candidates can enroll for the above programmes for one year. A candidate has to secure 60% Sessional marks in Theory and Practicals and also have a minimum of 80% attendance. On possessing the above requisites, candidates will be allowed to appear for the final examination conducted by NCVT, New Delhi in June/July every year. On passing the prescribed exam, trainees will be awarded the Certificate from NCVT.

Hostel : Hostel facilities are available for trainees on payment of Rs. 100/- per month as Hostel Rent and Rs. 50/- as Hostel service charge. Hostel Caution money Rs. 125/- per session (Refundable) are also to be deposited for availing hostel. Mess charges extra to be borne by the candidates.
Games : Outdoor Games & Open Gym facilities are available.
Working Hours : From 09.00 am to 5.30 pm with half hour lunch break on all working days (Monday to Friday).
Attendance : Minimum 80% attendance is required to appear in the Final Trade Test to be held at the end of the course.

Government of India initiated Craftsmen Training Scheme (CTS) in for imparting skills in various vocational trades to meet the skilled manpower requirements for technology and industrial growth of the country. About 70% of the training period is allotted to practical training and the rest to theoretical training relating to Trade theory.
